Woodstock
This past weekend I spent in Woodstock, Illinois. My sister asked me to serve as the Godfather or “da Godfatha” (I referred to myself as the latter all weekend) to her daughter, Larissa. The ceremony was scheduled for 8:30 AM on Sunday, so I arrived on Saturday. I tried to avoid offending anyone so i kept my mockery of their religion to a minimum. Refreshingly, my sister’s college roommate, Mandy (as uncomfortable as I was in church) was the Godmother. A minute or two into the service, Mandy whispered to me, “He’s kooky”. The priest couldn’t have been described more accurately. He was kooky. He reminded me of the Wallace Shawn character from The Princess Bride. There was a point during the never-ending mass that I was required to be on stage as they dipped Larissa’s head in the bird bath looking thing full of holy water. The priest asked us, “Do you believe in God? Do you believe in Jesus? Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? Do you renounce Satan?” It was at this point that I felt an inappropriately timed bout of the giggles coming on. Attempting to suppress them, I bit my cheek so hard that it still hurts.
