I, Robot

Going into see this I was cautiously optimistic. It’s a Will Smith action movie. Not that I have anything against Will Smith. He’s another actor who is usually playing a variation of himself in every movie. I think Will Smith, the action star either works really well or not at all. It’s always hit or miss. The first Men in Black movie was a fun comedy/action mix. He was good in that. The second Men in Black movie was miserable. Wild Wild West has been on HBO countless times over the last few years. I always try to watch it, but i can get through more than 15 minutes of it. I didn’t care for either Bad Boys movie. As a matter of fact, I walked out of the second one. Although, I really liked him in the underrated Enemy of the State.

Alex Proyas, I, Robot’s director, made Dark City, a futuristic film noir with William Hurt. I liked that a lot. So, I thought going in that there was hope.

I was pleasantly surprised. It’s good. There’s a pair of subplots that should have been cut. Outside of that, I really liked it. Smith tones his persona down a little. He’s very good in this.

I’m a big fan of “future on Earth” movies like Blade Runner and Minority Report. Proyas’ imagining of thirty years in the future is very interesting. I measure good CGI by whether or not I forget that it’s CGI during the movie. I did, I lost myself in the movie. The fight sequences are outstanding. The robots are very cool. Big thumbs up from me.

when have you ever walked out of a movie?

It doesn’t happen very often, but i have walked out on a few. Bad Boys 2 and Freddy Got Fingered are the only two that I can name off of the top of my head.
