July and Early August at the Movies
Here’s what i’ve seen over the past month and a half:
The Village - I read a couple of bad reviews prior to seeing it so my expectations going in were lowered. I have mixed feelings about M. Night Shyamalan. The Sixth Sense was brilliant. Unbreakable is a great film, among the best superhero movies ever made. He’s able to set up tension in his films better than anyone. When I saw Signs a couple of years ago, I felt betrayed. They pulled one over on me. It was sold through advertising as a science fiction film with aliens attacking Earth, when in fact, it was a thinly disguised Sunday school lesson with aliens attacking Earth. The Village is neither good nor bad, it’s just mediocre. The first half hour is very interesting. I like the tone that is set. Then the story’s direction become obvious and less interesting. Even with lowered expectations, I left disappointed.
Anchorman - Will Ferrell is great. This is the kind of movie that will get funnier with repeated viewings.
Collateral - Tom Cruise’s villain is really good. Jamie Foxx and Cruise play off of each other well. It’s a fun time at the movies.
Garfield - Thankfully, I wasn’t watching this one while holding a loaded gun in my mouth.
The Bourne Supremacy - I love revenge movies. This one is great. There’s a car chase in this that rivals the ones in Ronin and Bullitt.
