Voice Changer
Les, Tony and I stopped at Walgreens on the way back from lunch (another visit to the outstanding Q BBQ) and I made a small purchase. All of the Halloween items were out, including the black cats, skeletons and witches that light up, shake, shriek and howl at the press of a button. I couldn’t help myself. I had...

KFC
Last night during another fantastic episode of Lost (what’s the bald guy’s secret and why does the kid get to know?), KFC ran a commercial advertising some special meal deal that includes a “half gallon mega jug” of soda. Who’s watching TV saying to themselves, “I’m hungry, what should I eat? Hmmm, fried chicken sounds good, but i’ll need...

Sugar Cereal
I think that it’s time for me to be honest with you about my feelings for sugar cereal. I really love sugar cereal and I always have. I love it so much that it makes me crazy sometimes. My top ten favorites are: #1 - Cookie Crisp, #2 - Honeycomb, #3 - Cocoa Pebbles, #4 - Fruity Pebbles, #5...

The Main Event
The gauntlet has been laid down. The one time friendly disagreement about who can eat more crab legs has escalated to full out war. Former close friends, now bitter rivals, Bryan and Dan are going to do battle at the dinner table to once and for all put this thing to rest. Who will be crowned the King of...

Will This Man Ever Defend His Title?
The guy pictured here is my friend Bryan. He’s the man who’s responsible for the design of this website. Aside from being the self appointed, yet widely recognized King of Brunch, he’s also a web design super genius. His site is bbuchs.f2o.org. He is part of a group that gets together every so often for a game of world...

Few Things Are More Underrated Than A Good Piece Of Apple Pie
Late last week, Les and I went to Q BBQ in Bay View for lunch. Their pulled pork sandwich was good. You put your own barbeque sauce on their sandwiches. I’d recommend the Quazy hot sauce, it had a nice kick to it. Afterward, we walked across the street to have desert at Cafe Lulu. Their pie is really good....

The Romantic Comedy With Zombies
Shaun of the Dead is very good on many levels. It’s undoubtedly the most accessible zombie movie, a zombie movie for people who don’t like zombie movies, if you will. The story is about a lovable loser with girl problems that are mostly caused by his obnoxious best friend’s influence. Soon zombies show up, as always, without much explanation....

Melvin Goes To Dinner
Since i’ve had this Hollywood Video all-you-can-rent pass, i’ve gorged myself with mostly bad movies. I’ve rented some really awful stuff. FYI, the worst of the worst: In The Cut, Duplex and Love Don’t Cost A Thing. My theory was, i’m not paying for them individually so if i pick out a real dog, at least I didn’t pay...

Spike Jonze
I rented a DVD last night of Spike Jonze videos and short films. There was one in particular that I really liked, ”How They Get There” A Short Film With Mark Gonzales. Here’s a link to it....

Lost
It was less than five minutes into the series premiere of Lost that one of the plane crash survivors walks past the plane engine and gets sucked into it. It was at that moment that the new show had its hooks in me. The first hour of Lost was fantastic television. Some of my thoughts: #1 What is that...

The Story of Everest
I bought a copy of the Mr. Show season four DVD yesterday. I’m a big fan of the series. This collection includes the funniest half hour of television i’ve ever seen, an episode titled “The Story of Everest”. If you haven’t seen the show, this episode would be a great introduction. It’s pure genius, especially the last two sketches....

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
I was really excited to see Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. I caught a matinee yesterday. My reaction in a nutshell: I liked the idea more than I liked the result. Sky Captain pays homage to old serial shorts like Flash Gordon. The retro robots, weaponry designs and the film’s look are pretty cool. Unfortunately, the novelty...

Spring Green
I had a nice weekend in the charming town of Spring Green. After a two hour drive from Milwaukee, I arrived on Saturday afternoon. Rajan hooked me up with a ticket for the matinee at the American Players Theater. It’s a great venue. If you’ve never been there, it’s worth the drive to Spring Green for this alone. I...

The Station Agent
I rented The Station Agent the other night. If you haven’t seen this already, rent it soon. It’s such a charming film. The story is about a lonely man who inherits a train depot in New Jersey, and the friendships that he makes with people from the town. Peter Dinklage (he was the children’s book author who attacks Will...

Who Don't Like Cake?!!
I got a call from Jason late Saturday afternoon. He didn’t have any plans, so I drove down to Chicago to hang out. When you live the life of leisure, you do such things. The Guinness Oyster Fest was being held at the New City YMCA, the same place the Flaming Lips played last summer. Lucky for us, Cake was...

Stone Creek Coffee Bakery
I’ve mentioned before what a nice little hangout this place is. Outside of the free wireless and the good coffee, one of the big draws of this place is its bakery. Everything i’ve had has been delicious. They told me that they get it from City Market on Watertown Plank Road. Kudos to you, City Market bakers. My favorites: cinnamon...

Tosa Fest
Dan and I wandered down to Tosa Fest last night and were quite impressed. State street was closed off for a couple of blocks. By looking around, we figured that all of Wauwatosa showed up this year. There was no shortage of food and beer tents. We had pizza from the Bartolotta’s Pizzeria Piccolo. It was pretty good. The band...

Life Without Cable
I’ve been without cable since I moved. Surprisingly, I haven’t missed it that much. The HBO shows (Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Curb Your Enthusiasm, etc.) are really the only thing that i’d have a hard time doing without. Thankfully, Les, Dan and Jen have opened their homes to me on Sunday nights. This Sunday is the last Six Feet...

The Manchurian Candidate
I was pleasantly surprised. Although it has many of the same general ideas and plot points as the original film, it’s completely different. Denzel plays the Sinatra role, but the character isn’t the same. In this version, he’s a way more complicated character. I like the changes to the story, they made it more interesting. As an added bonus,...

Badgers
Bryan, Raj and I spent Saturday afternoon at Camp Randall watching the Badgers roll over Central Florida 34-6 in their season opener. It was fun. We sat in the new south endzone seats (pictured). The team should be good this year. They looked great running the ball. Unfortunately, Anthony Davis left the game early with an eye injury. The...

Live Forever
I rented this great movie over the weekend. It’s a documentary that chronicles the rise and fall of England’s “Brit Pop” scene in the 1990s. It begins with the Stone Roses and goes through Robbie Williams. The majority of the film consists of band interviews. There’s a lot with Noel and Liam Gallagher. They’re such incredibly arrogant pricks, it’s comical....

Lawn Boy
A couple weeks ago my neighbors, a nice elderly couple, told me about a kid in the neighborhood who cuts lawns for $7 a week. I wanted in on this sweet deal, so they gave me the kid’s number. I left a message on his machine inquiring about his services. When Jim and I went to the game two nights...
