The Manchurian Candidate

I was pleasantly surprised. Although it has many of the same general ideas and plot points as the original film, it’s completely different. Denzel plays the Sinatra role, but the character isn’t the same. In this version, he’s a way more complicated character. I like the changes to the story, they made it more interesting.

As an added bonus, the director, Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Something Wild, Philadelphia) always sticks the same character actors in his movies. It’s fun to spot them as they pop up through out the film. His movies tend to have some interesting cameos (like John Waters, John Sayles, Chris Isaak and Dr. J, to name a few) as well. In The Manchurian Candidate, Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire’s angel who gives up his wings) and singer Robyn Hitchcock have cameo roles.
