Life Without Cable
I’ve been without cable since I moved. Surprisingly, I haven’t missed it that much. The HBO shows (Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Curb Your Enthusiasm, etc.) are really the only thing that i’d have a hard time doing without. Thankfully, Les, Dan and Jen have opened their homes to me on Sunday nights. This Sunday is the last Six Feet Under of the season. After that HBO starts season three of The Wire and a new show about bounty hunters. Neither interests me, so i’ll hold off on getting cable for a while.
A couple of weeks ago, I discovered the neighborhood video store, Hollywood Video. On my first visit, I was at the counter renting a pair of movies when the clerk told me about their MVP (Movie Value Pass) program. It’s like Netflix, but better and cheaper. For $10 a month, you get to rent unlimited movies (three at a time) except new releases (after a month they’re part of the program). I’ve been in there about every other day.
The other night I watched a couple of movies. The first was The Big Bounce. I really liked it. There isn’t much of a plot but Owen Wilson is very funny in it. The second movie was Secret Window. Wow, what a disappointment. Unless you’ve never seen a movie before, you’ll figure out the big plot twist in the first 15 minutes of the movie. Aside from that, the characters aren’t remotely interesting. It’s a bad movie.
