Melvin Goes To Dinner

Since i’ve had this Hollywood Video all-you-can-rent pass, i’ve gorged myself with mostly bad movies. I’ve rented some really awful stuff. FYI, the worst of the worst: In The Cut, Duplex and Love Don’t Cost A Thing. My theory was, i’m not paying for them individually so if i pick out a real dog, at least I didn’t pay for it.

On the other hand, i’ll luck out from time to time and pick out a real gem. Last night I rented Melvin Goes To Dinner. It’s really interesting. The movie is about four acquaintances who meet for dinner.

It’s wonderful when you find yourself around interesting people that you feel comfortable with, losing pretension, having honest conversations about things that are important to you, speaking passionately about ideas and opinions. To be a jerk every now and then and not having it held against you. That’s what this movie is about.

It was written by and stars Michael Blieden. You may remember him from The Daily Show. He used to have a funny segment on that show where he’d review music videos.

If you rent it, check out the short film, The Frank International Film Festival, on the DVD. It’s with Blieden, Bob Odenkirk (who directed the movie) and Fred Armisen (from SNL). It documents the filmmakers’ visit to an obscure film fest. Hilarious.
