Infernal Affairs

I stopped by the Times Cinema over the weekend. They were playing Infernal Affairs, a Hong Kong cat and mouse thriller about the mafia and the police department who both have moles inside the other’s organization. It’s a really engaging movie. Before seeing this, I read an article comparing the directors, Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, to Michael Mann. I agree with the comparison. This movie seems to be heavily influenced by Mann’s Heat. Remember that movie’s great scene between Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino in the coffee shop? If you liked that, you’ll really like this. The directors do a wonderful job of building tension until the end when they give us a great payoff.

It’s being released on DVD on December 7th.
