Another Christmas Story
Another 2004 Christmas memory:
My family sits around the tree while exchanging gifts. Everyone has a big pile in front of them. We take turns opening, revealing to everyone what it is and who it’s from.
Connie and I went to the dollar store in Greenfield a few days before Christmas to buy for everyone. For example, my Dad got a scarf and a picture frame, my brother Jeff, a bottle of Jordache cologne, my brother-in-law, Kory, a nice digital watch, etc.
When our presents were opened by the recipients, neither of us gave any hint that they were a gag gifts. It was so hard keeping a straight face.
After the gift exchange, Connie and I made an excuse about having to leave right away. We went out to my car to change me into my Santa Claus costume and grab the real gifts “from Santa”.
I told my sister, Sue, of our plan. She served as our accomplice. It was her job to take pictures of the family getting the dollar store gifts, and get reactions to the presents while we were gone.
The best reaction was from my step sister, Julie. Sue approached her while I was changing. “So, Julie, what did you think of the gifts from Chuck and Connie?”, she asked. Julie replied in a disapproving tone, “I know that you and Chuck are real tight, but I think those presents were from the dollar store.”
