2004 Oscars - My Two Cents

I love movies, so i’ve taken a passing interest in what films are nominated and win the Academy Awards from year to year. It’s hard to take any of this seriously because ultimately it’s just an industry circle jerk.

When nominations come out i like to see what i thought was the year’s best vs. what they think. If the Academy would have scraped their nominating process and left the selections up to a Polish kid from Milwaukee’s southside, the Best Picture category would have looked like this: Before Sunset, Sideways, Eternal Sunshine, The Life Aquatic and Closer. Unfortunately, it’s not a perfect world.

I’ve seen all of their nominees. Jamie Foxx does a great Ray Charles and Neverland choked me up at the end, but neither is even close to being the greatest achievement in film for 2004. Aviator and Million Dollar Baby are good films and from what i’ve read, the front runners. That’s too bad because of the five nominees, Sideways is the only great film in that category.

HBO’s Carnivale is getting really good, i’ll be watching that instead. I like Chris Rock, so i’ll probably peek in from time to time tonight.

Hey Chuck,

My company and team(Ring of Fire Studios) has been mentioned in some Post-Oscar thanks from the Spiderman 2 team and John Dykstra. We all won for Best Visual FX and beat out Harry Potter and a Will Smith Video Game. Pretty awesome to get a shout out. Dykstra is an old school dude and an old Star Wars guy.

If you would have asked a drunken me on the “six” porch in 1996 that I would be involved in an academy award for a Spiderman movie…. first I would have puked up Oakland Gyros, and then I would have told you were crazy.
