Spring 2005 at the Movies
I’ve been to the movies pretty often this year. Here’s what i’ve seen and a few thoughts:
Constantine
Another stiff performance from Keanu, ridiculous religious mumbo-jumbo, good cgi.
Sin City
Robert Rodriguez is the bomb. The movie has great energy.
The Interpreter
Interesting story idea, good setup, the last half hour is a big letdown.
Racing Stripes
I get really frustrated with dumbed down family entertainment like this. The Shrek movies and all of the Pixar stuff have set the bar high.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Fun movie, Sam Rockwell is great in it.
Fever Pitch
Jimmy Fallon is awful. He and Drew Barrymore have no chemistry. Big disappointment.
Hostage
Dumb Die Hard-like retread. We’ve seen this movie done before, only much better
Kicking and Screaming
Bad News Bears + soccer - the laughs = a terrible movie
A Lot Like Love
A decent romantic comedy
Crash
One of the better movies i’ve seen recently, it reminded me a lot of Magnolia.
Assault on Precinct 13
Fun action movie, Laurence Fishburne plays one bad mf’r.
The Upside of Anger
The movie is a Terms of Endearment wannabe, without the great characters.
Kung Fu Hustle
Great action, Great laughs.
The Jacket
Another interesting idea for a movie that didn’t work very well.
Melinda and Melinda
Will Ferrell is so perfectly cast in this movie. It’s Woody Allen’s best movie since Sweet and Lowdown and the best movie so far this year.
Mindhunters
A Renny Harlin action, whodunit that is good and interesting until the finale where the movie runs out of steam.
Revenge of the Sith
Not the grand slam that i thought it’d be, more of a two run scoring ground rule double. The Sidious stuff was great and ROTS serves nicely as a bridge between the two trilogies, but it wasn’t the movie that I was hoping for. My biggest problem is Hayden Christensen. I don’t think he worked that well as Anakin. The battle between Luke and Darth in Empire is so great because of the audience’s strong emotional connection to the hero and his fate. We were deeply invested in the characters, that’s why the melodramatic “I’m your father” moment was so powerful. The Obi-Won/Anakin duel at the end of ROTS should have been an equally powerful part in the series. It wasn’t. Overall all though, this is the best movie of last three.
Unleashed
Much better than The One, great Massive Attack soundtrack, cool fight scene, cool movie
Cinderella Man
It tries to be the Seabiscuit of boxing, the movie takes too long to get going. When it does, it isn’t anything more than mediocre. Sure to be the most overrated movie of the year.
