Halloween Memories

While watching the annual airing of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (which still holds its charm, mostly because of its familiarity) last night, it dawned on me that Halloween is this weekend. Last year, I went with Connie to her friend’s party as a pirate. It was awesome. I had a cool hat and sword. Unfortunately, there will be no costume for me this year.

I’ve always loved Halloween. As a kid, I really liked the whole “door-to-door begging for candy” thing. I lived in the suburbs until I was 13. The crew that I ran with really knew how to trick or treat. From noon until 3:00 we would run like banshees straight out of hell, from one house to the next. If someone in our group fell or lagged behind, we left them and carried on.

My favorites were the houses where they left the candy dish unattended in front of their door. In hindsight, I felt a little bad for the kids who stopped there after me, only to find an empty dish…ahh…who am I kidding? I didn’t feel bad at all. It was more candy for me. I was a candy pirate. At that age, candy and video games vied for the top spot on my “most important” list.

Instead of one of those plastic pumpkins with a handle, I would go around with a Hefty bag. I filled that thing at least a quarter full. The candy lasted for months.

Man, those were the days! I loved Halloween too! I remember running throughout the subdivision with my friends trying to get as much candy as I could. What great memories!
