Our West Coast correspondent Andy G. sent out an e-mail with a link to a classic SNL short film. This blast from the past needs to be shared, so here it is. Thanks, Andy.

The H is O

I was laughing my ass off again and again. It’s a classic. I think Adam McKay is following up Anchorman and the H is O with the Nascar comedy “Talladega Nights” starring Ferrell and Ali G.

Couple of questions/points:

  1. Why can’t SNL be this funny at least more than 25% of the time vs. their 75% of yawns and Sh_t.

  2. Why Can’t Ben Stiller be this funny all the time?

  3. Was the air date on this the last day that Will Ferrell was not over-exposed?

  4. Horatio Sanz, still on the show. wow.

I love Will Ferrell, especially in Melinda and Melinda, but the guy needs to take a pass on the obvious crap. Kicking and Screaming was awful. I walked out of Bewitched.

I caught Taxi with Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah on HBO recently. I kept thinking “Wow! Is this really a movie?! Somebody at some point thought that this was a good idea and spent a lot of money to make it”.

The thing that got me about The H is O after watching it again was the insanely brilliant timing of the lines that, at that point, you never saw before. Will Ferrell in Anchorman, as much as I loved that movie, sort of ruined the rest of his act for me just a bit because Ron Burgandy is a collection and hodge-podge of little voice inflections and other mannerisms he’s been using in other characters for years. It’s hard to explain, but when I watch him I can see it.

The other great thing is Stiller is playing the “coolest” guy in the group and not his usual, “Ben Stiller: attractive, good guy nerd.” The laugh he gets out of using the word “jagweed” is priceless. You’re right, Andy, why can’t Stiller always be that funny?

I think the reason those guys aren’t that funny more often is because, how many chances does Adam McKay get to work with them in a completely uninhibited atmosphere? I mean, even 7 or 8 years after the fact, The H is O is still pretty ridiculous in its content. Will Ferrell makes Ben Stiller eat dog food during a homosexual one-night stand that also involves a third man being brought into the bedroom. Seriously, did the censor cut out anything?! Doubtful.

The H is O is the perfectly pitched short film. How many things from the Will Ferrell era are as funny? Blue Oyster Cult/More Cowbell is the only thing that ranks up there. “I Drive a Dodge Stratus” was memorable but not as funny. I don’t know how Hollywood works, Andy, but I’m guessing Adam McKay isn’t involved with Anchorman and Talladega Nights without The H is O. It makes me believe in America again. A guy who laughs at the prospect of another man picking up former Eagle Glenn Frey in a bar can now be involved in widely popular comedy motion pictures most people throughout the country just love.

USA! USA! USA!
