DC Trip - Part One

Hey Folks! I’ve been away the last week. My Dad and I went to one of his Post Office conventions in Washington DC. We had a great time, so I thought I’d share some stories and pictures.

We got into town on Friday morning. It was in the 70s and sunny. After checking into our hotel, we wandered down to the Tidal Basin where all of the Cherry Blossoms were blooming.

Across the street from the Holocaust museum (fascinating, yet horribly depressing)was a vendor selling hotdogs and Polish sausages. We were both really hungry, so ignoring better judgment, we ordered from them. My dad got your regular run-of-the-mill hotdog. I ordered the Polish sausage, but instead I got a giant hotdog (their version). It was disgusting.

Friday night, the Washington Nationals and the Baltimore Orioles played each other for the first time ever in an exhibition game at RFK. I love baseball. My Dad loves baseball. So, we took in the game.

One of my favorite parts of the game was the President race on the scoreboard. Much like the Brewers’ sausage race, the Nationals have a race where cartoon versions of Abe Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Teddy Roosevelt push and shove each other all the way to the finish line. It was funny and pretty cool.

When my Dad asked me to go a few months back, I checked to see what was going on in town during our stay. I found out that Dave Chappelle was doing a benefit concert at the Kennedy Center for the high school he attended, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. The day that tickets went on sale, I couldn’t get through. Tickets sold out in less than a half an hour.

On Monday night, My Dad had a banquet to go to. I was on my own, so I went down to the venue and tried to score a ticket for myself. After walking around the Kennedy Center for twenty minutes, I finally found a guy selling one.

The show was great. Chappelle was on for about an hour. He talked about how great it is that people think that he’s crazy, because now he can do things like go to Starbucks and whack off and nobody will think anything of it. Other topics included his take on the TV show Cheaters, running into Jessica Simpson at a LA restaurant, and Iceberg Slim.
