Bagel Ladies, Where's My Smile?!!

My office is in Hales Corners. There’s only one option for bagels in this neck of the woods, Big Apple. The good news is that it’s conveniently located a block away from me. The bad news is that the bagels aren’t that great, and the bagel ladies won’t even give me a smile.

Einstein’s bagels are my favorite, Brueggers’ bagels aren’t a bad alternative, but the bagels at Big Apple are OK at best, and the ladies at the front counter won’t ever smile.

Here are the facts:

  • There are four ladies whose ages range from early forties to mid sixties that work the front counter.

  • They never smile, not to me, not to other customers, not to each other, no smiles

  • I’ve been in there at least one a week for over a year - the number of smiles I’ve witnessed: zero.

The ladies aren’t rude or discourteous, but if you’re in the service industry, smiles and general friendliness are kind of expected, right? The bagel ladies are sometimes the first personal interaction that I have in the morning. They could at least attempt to start my day out right. C’mon bagel ladies, I’m asking nicely, will you please give me a smile every now and then.

Have you smiled at the bagel ladies? What a downer to start your day without a friendly smile! It must be that they wake up too early to make those yummy bagels.

Longtime reader first-time contributor. Give those nice ladies a smile, Chuck. Surely they’ll respond in kind. You could even tell them a little joke, such as this:
A neutron goes into a bar and asks the bartender, “How much for a beer?” The bartender replies, “For you, no charge.” That little number is guarenteed to turn their frowns upside down. If it doesn’t, then they’re a useless bunch of cunts. Tell them you have a grandma their age, and she’s already dead. I like Einstein’s, too.
