My Summer at the Movies

I love going to the movies. I especially love going in the summer. This summer, I haven’t been able to take as many trips to the multiplex as I would’ve liked to. I still want to see Miami Vice, Little Miss Sunshine, A Scanner Darkly, Monster House and a few others that looked good.

From what I did see, outside a few movies, this has been a pretty disappointing summer.

The most entertaining movies this summer:

  • #1 - Ricky Bobby - I laughed so hard I cried a few times. Funniest movie in a while
  • #2 - Pirates 2 - I liked it better than the first film
  • #3 - Cars - Clever, entertaining
  • #4 - Mission Impossible 3 - Philip Seymour Hoffman is the man
  • #5 - The Inconvenient Truth - Fascinating

Biggest Disappointments:

  • Superman - Spacey and the kid subplot sunk this ship.
  • X-Men 3 - Terrible decisions were made with the plot and story lacked depth.
  • Da Vinci Code - Dull
  • Nacho Libre - It probably would have been a much better movie without Black. His Tenacious D-like shtick was distracting.

Least favorite movies this summer:

  • The Break Up - This may have been the worst time I’ve ever had watching a movie. It’s miserable.
  • Click - Sounded like an interesting premise. Unfortunately, I didn’t laugh a single time. Come to think of it, when was the last time Adam Sandler was in something funny. I should have known better.

…..Punch Drunk Love ain’t bad, but yeah Sandler sucks the pipe hard.

Faves in my head

1: Pirates 2. If only for Davy Jones Effects. Wow. 2: Ricky Bobby 3: Snakes on a Plane 4: Scanner Darkly

It was bleak with big anticpations like X-men and Superman being middle class or just plain sucking hard. I didnt even make it to a lot like MI:3 and Nacho Libre. Nothing really fired me up to get there and check stuff out. Plenty was forgettable

Via my Netflix, I do recommend on DVD though:

Where the truth lies Weeds (showtime series) Breakfast on Pluto Return of the Living Dead 2 Inside Deep Throat Stander

2006-07 has me frothing at the mouth for the new Chris Nolan movie called, “The Prestige” That looks like the coolest movie ever made ever.

I saw the first season of Weeds recently and was impressed by it too. With the second season just starting, I’ve considered picking up Showtime for a couple of months.

Showtime will be very pleased to hear about your blog comment, Chuck.

I’m not sure if I like Ricky Bobby more for its accomplishment as a funny summer comedy or for its astonishing achievement of passing off as a massive box office success that mocks every single decent moral value people say is part of what makes this great and traditional life in America.

Besides the soft, distracting and not really germane “Ricky Bobby’s daddy” subplot, the thing is just an outstanding dissection of 50 percent of the country.

And then, also a joke about a dude spreading his butt cheeks for money as an 18-year-old.

Brilliant.
