Cloverfield - Movie Review

I saw the trailer for “1-18-08” when it came out a few months back. All I gathered from it was that something wreaks havoc in New York City. What ever it is rips the head off of the Statue of Liberty in the preview. It looked interesting. As months past I was vaguely aware that it was building a lot of buzz on the internet and had been named “Cloverfield”. That was all I knew going in to see it.

Wow. It’s good, really good. It’s basically a monster movie. The way it’s presented, the camcorder thing, feels pretty fresh. At first, I thought the novelty of the style would wear out its welcome early on. It didn’t. It’s was a perfect way to capture the chaos and draw you in. The first part of the movie seemed like an episode of the Real World with a cast of young professionals gathering for a party. We get to know the characters enough to care about them. Then the action begins. The cause of the ruckus comes without any explanation. I loved that.

Overall it’s a very tense hour or so of action. The special effects are top notch. I really dug the ending. That’s all you really need to know. It’s good stuff.

I give it two rocketship thumbs up! It’s a monster movie, but it’s not about the monster. The POV style means that you don’t know any more about what the f*&^ is going on than the characters onscreen, which was great. I don’t want to say too much about it.
